Formula 1 Expertise
Ian’s journey in the world of Formula 1 is nothing short of remarkable. He has held key positions at some of the most prestigious teams in the sport:
- Head of Rapid Prototyping at Scuderia Toro Rosso/Alpha Tauri F1 Team
- Rapid Prototyping Manager at Caterham F1 Team
- Programming Team Leader for Rapid Prototyping at Mercedes F1 and Brawn GP
During his time with these teams, Ian demonstrated exceptional skills in managing additive manufacturing departments, significantly reducing costs and improving efficiency.
Achievements in F1
At Caterham F1, Ian established the entire additive manufacturing department within 18 months, reducing substantial costs for the team. His expertise shone even brighter at Toro Rosso F1, where he made significant improvements in his first year. Ian reduced annual spending, improved throughput and quality, and significantly expanded the AM department over the next few years.
Perhaps most notably, Ian was part of the Brawn GP team that achieved an unprecedented feat in 2009. Despite facing potential redundancy when Honda withdrew from F1, Ian remained with the team through its transition to Brawn GP. His contributions played a role in the team’s extraordinary success, as Brawn GP went on to win both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ World Championships in their sole year of competition – a remarkable underdog story that has become legendary in Formula 1 history.
This experience at Brawn GP, combined with his later achievements at other F1 teams, demonstrates Ian’s ability to excel under pressure and contribute to groundbreaking successes in the high-stakes world of motorsport.
Extensive Industry Experience
Before his Formula 1 career, Ian spent 14 years working in various bureaus, gaining hands-on experience with a wide range of manufacturing techniques and programming AM machinery. This diverse background has given him invaluable insights into all areas of additive manufacturing.
